UN Removes Penalties on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the following week.
He was appointed transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.
America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to the extremist organization. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.
More Penalties Removed
Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for backing the country and its population."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.
The pair met initially during May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the Middle East.
Following that encounter, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country before he cut connections during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
The upcoming meeting is not the president's debut journey to America during this period. This past fall, he became the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.
During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
