At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.
Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.
Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.
Government representatives said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Community members have likened the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.
Mission Context
The combined action by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
Wider Perspective
Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the South American nation prior to important worldwide conferences in the country.
The United Nations climate conference COP30 is taking place in the city of Belem in the north in November.
