Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Claim Numerous Fatalities in Recent Border Fighting
Fresh hostilities broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday morning, with each side accusing the opposing side of initiating lethal clashes.
The Pakistani military stated that its forces had eliminated "15-20 Taliban fighters" and injured numerous others in the Spin Boldak border district.
A Afghan authorities spokesman said that twelve Afghan civilians had been killed and over a hundred injured by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that several Pakistani soldiers had been lost their lives. None of the reported deaths could be independently confirmed.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions shook Afghanistan recently, which Kabul attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban deny claims that it is harboring militants targeting Pakistan.

The opposing forces are not only battling for the advantage on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, attempting to convince the public that their side is causing more damage.
The latest clashes follow severe cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Taliban claimed to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan said it killed two hundred "Taliban and affiliated insurgents". The claimed casualty figures announced by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.
A few days of fragile peace that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday.
Local Accounts and Consequences
Videos purportedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared online and on social channels, including footage said to be of those killed and blurry shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of check posts destroyed. These recordings have not been verified.
A informant in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting erupted at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another resident in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, said that "very heavy clashes persisted for almost five hours".
"I see unmanned aircraft and fighter planes flying over us, some of our family members are injured," they said.
A doctor in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "7 bodies and thirty-six injured transported to the medical center", including males, females and minors.
The circumstances were "tense" and more casualties were being taken to medical care, he said.
Displacement and Global Responses
A regional authority figure in the area stated that "hundreds of families have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the intense fighting". He said they were on "high alert" after a several military positions were attacked by aircraft from Pakistan. He added that they had the bodies of two Pakistani military members.
In a separate overnight clash on the north-western frontier, the Pakistani military said that 25 to 30 Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have prompted calls for de-escalation from foreign nations including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could step in to broker peace.
On Wednesday, a UN official, United Nations representative on the conditions of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the fighting.
"I urge all parties to exercise the utmost caution, protect non-combatants, and follow global regulations," he stated.
Historical Disputes
Islamabad has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their territory and battle against the Pakistani administration in an effort to impose a strict religion-based system of governance.
